Syrian Hamster Care Guide

Setup

Bigger is not always better, what matters most is that the enclosure is enriching and comfortable for your pet. A cluttered habitat filled with cork logs, wooden tunnels, branches, cardboard hides, and chew toys helps them feel secure while encouraging natural behaviors.

Provide at least 4 inches of bedding, though 6–8+ inches is strongly recommended. Deep bedding allows Syrians to construct stable burrows, create nesting chambers, and display natural digging behaviors.

A water bottle is generally preferred over a bowl since bedding can easily contaminate an open water source. If a bowl is used, choose a heavy ceramic dish that cannot be tipped over, and check it frequently. Fresh water should always be available.

Exercise wheels must have a solid running surface with no bars or mesh.

Wheel Size

  • Minimum size: 10 inches

  • Recommended size: 11–12+ inches (keeps the spine straight while running)

Feeding

Syrian hamsters are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet based around a high-quality hamster seed mix or complete laboratory block. A balanced seed mix encourages natural foraging behavior while providing a wide range of nutrients.

A quality diet should contain approximately 16–20% protein, with slightly higher protein levels suitable for growing juveniles, pregnant females, and nursing mothers.

Food should be refreshed daily. Fresh vegetables should be offered several times each week, and any uneaten fresh food should be removed within a few hours to prevent spoilage.

Healthy enrichment foods include:

  • Millet or oat sprays

  • Dried herbs and flowers

  • Dried vegetables

  • Mealworms

  • Crickets

  • Boiled egg

  • Plain cooked chicken (unseasoned)

  • Pumpkin seeds (occasionally)

Fresh vegetables such as broccoli, cucumber, zucchini, bell pepper, romaine lettuce, and peas can be offered in moderation.

Fruit should only be given occasionally due to its sugar content.

Bedding

Deep, absorbent bedding is essential for both physical and mental wellbeing. Syrian hamsters spend much of their lives underground, and providing sufficient bedding allows them to create complex burrow systems similar to those they would build in the wild.

Safe bedding options include:

  • Aspen shavings

  • Unscented paper bedding

  • Hemp bedding

  • Kiln-dried pine

These materials provide good odor control while supporting tunneling and nesting behaviors.

Avoid:

  • Cedar bedding

  • Scented bedding

  • Dusty bedding

  • Cotton nesting fluff

  • Corn cob bedding

  • Chinchilla dust

Maintaining a deep layer of clean bedding and performing regular spot cleaning helps preserve natural scent markings while minimizing stress from frequent full enclosure cleanouts.

Enrichment

Syrian hamsters are highly intelligent and benefit from a constantly changing environment. Rotate enrichment items regularly to encourage exploration and reduce boredom.

Recommended enrichment includes:

  • Cork logs

  • Multi-chamber hides

  • Wooden tunnels

  • Grapevine branches

  • Willow chew toys

  • Cardboard tubes and boxes

  • Dig boxes with different substrates

  • Sand bath

  • Scatter feeding

  • Foraging toys

  • Safe herbs and sprays

Changing the layout every few weeks can help keep the enclosure stimulating without causing unnecessary stress.

Cleaning

Daily:

  • Replace spoiled water

  • Remove spoiled fresh foods

  • Spot-clean soiled bedding if necessary

Weekly:

  • Clean the wheel, sand bath, and food dishes

  • Check all enrichment items for wear or damage

Every 4–8 weeks:

  • Perform a partial enclosure clean while retaining most of the clean bedding and nesting material. Preserving familiar scents helps reduce stress and allows the hamster to readjust more quickly.

Health & Welfare

A healthy Syrian hamster should have:

  • Bright, clear eyes

  • Clean ears and nose

  • Smooth, quiet breathing

  • A clean, glossy coat

  • Healthy teeth

  • A good appetite

  • Firm droppings

  • Normal activity during the evening and night

Social Housing

Unlike Campbell's dwarf hamsters, Syrian hamsters are strictly solitary once mature.

They should always be housed alone, regardless of sex or whether they are siblings. Housing multiple Syrians together almost always results in territorial aggression, severe injuries, or death as they reach adulthood.
