Setup

Beetles are generally low-stress in captivity, but they still require a secure and appropriate enclosure that supports their natural behaviors. The setup should be simple, stable, and tailored to the species being kept. Adults typically benefit from a well-ventilated enclosure with hiding areas such as cork bark, branches, leaf litter, and pieces of rotting wood for climbing and shelter.

For most adult beetles, a vertically oriented enclosure is ideal, especially for climbing species. Ensure there is enough space for movement, but avoid overly large or empty setups, which can increase stress and reduce activity.

Larvae require a completely different setup than adults. They must be kept in a deep substrate environment with minimal disturbance. Suitable substrates include flake soil, rotting hardwood, or species-specific enriched media such as kinshi (fungus-inoculated wood).

Adult beetles should always have access to climbing surfaces and hiding spots, while larvae should be kept in dark, stable conditions without decor to allow uninterrupted feeding and growth.

Larvae feed exclusively on their substrate, consuming decomposing organic material such as flake soil or rotting wood depending on species. High-quality substrate is essential for healthy growth and development.
