Phidippus Sp. Care Guide

Jumping Spider Care Guide (Phidippus sp.)

Enclosure

Phidippus species, commonly known as jumping spiders, are active visual hunters that do best in well-ventilated enclosures with vertical space for climbing. Arboreal-style enclosures are recommended, as they naturally prefer higher areas to rest and build hammocks.

A suitable enclosure should include:

  • Good cross ventilation
  • Climbing surfaces such as cork bark, twigs, vines, or foliage
  • Anchor points near the top for web hammocks
  • Secure lids, as jumping spiders are fast and curious

Spiderlings can be kept in small deli cups or sling enclosures, while adults generally do well in enclosures around 4x4x8 inches or similar sizes.

Avoid overly damp or stagnant setups, as poor airflow can lead to mold and health issues.

Temperature & Humidity

Most Phidippus species thrive at temperatures between 72–80°F. Standard room temperatures are usually acceptable as long as they remain stable.

Humidity requirements vary slightly by species, tropical species should be misted daily, while arid species should be misted weekly.

Always provide a small water source through light misting on enclosure walls or decor, as jumping spiders often drink water droplets rather than standing water.

Feeding

Phidippus spiders are insectivores and should be fed appropriately sized live prey. Good feeder options include:

  • Fruit flies (for slings)
  • Small crickets
  • Roaches
  • Bottle flies
  • Mealworms occasionally

Prey items should generally be no larger than the spider’s abdomen.

Juveniles typically eat every 2–4 days, while adults may eat every 5–7 days depending on size and feeding response. Avoid overfeeding, as overly large abdomens can increase the risk of injury from falls.

Remove uneaten prey after 24 hours, especially during premolt periods.

Molting

Like all spiders, jumping spiders molt as they grow. Before molting, they may:

  • Refuse food
  • Become less active
  • Stay inside their hammock for several days

Do not disturb or feed the spider during this time. Increased humidity through light misting can help support a successful molt.

After molting, wait several days before feeding to allow the new exoskeleton and fangs to harden fully.

Handling

Phidippus species are generally considered calm and curious, making them one of the more beginner-friendly pet spiders. However, they are delicate animals and should always be handled carefully and close to soft surfaces.

Avoid sudden movements, squeezing, or excessive handling sessions, as falls can seriously injure or kill them.

Lifespan

Most Phidippus species live around:

  • Males: 1–1.5 years
  • Females: 1.5–3 years

Females generally live longer and usually grow larger than males.
