About Ghost Mantises
The ghost mantis (Phyllocrania paradoxa) is a small species of praying mantis known for its incredible dead-leaf camouflage. Their unique appearance and calm temperament make them one of the most popular beginner mantis species. Ghost mantises will often sway back and forth to imitate a leaf blowing in the wind and may even play dead when startled.
The mantis shown in the photo is displaying a defensive threat posture, spreading its wings to appear larger and more intimidating. Males of this species are also capable fliers and can fly surprisingly well.
This species is not native to the United States and must never be released into the wild.
